Trade Unionists convicted of kidnapping and assault

This Day in History: 16 October 1991
Three leading trade unionists, Jay Naidoo, Fholisani Mufamadi and Moses Mayekiso were convicted of kidnapping and assault after the holding of security policeman Monge Maleka in the Congress of South African and Trade Unions (COSATU) offices for five hours on 28 August 1990. A fine of R2 000 each or one year in prison with a year suspended for three years was imposed. Naidoo, Secretary-General of COSATU, his deputy Mufamadi and Mayekiso, Secretary-General of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, said they would appeal against the conviction and sentence.
