Stanley Bongani Nkosi was born on 25 November 1945 in Newcastle, Natal (now kwaZulu Natal). When Nkosi was three years old his family moved to Dukathole near Germiston in the Transvaal (now Gauteng). He attended school in Germiston where he attained his Junior Certificate. He also studied sculpture as a private student with Peter Hayden. Nkosi moved to Johannesburg in 1962 and studied privately with Cecil Skotnes and became a decorator of lamp bases at the Artlite factory. In 1973 he became a full-time artist. He travelled to London where met former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and Henry Moore in 1974 and attended the London School of Art for two months. In 1980 he visited New Zealand and the USA where he appeared on television several times. At the invitation of the University of Nebraska, Nkosi travelled to the USA again in 1981. In 1982 Nkosi built an Art Gallery in Katlehong.
