Sheila Cussons is born

South African poet Sheila Cussons was born at Moravia, near Piketberg in the Cape Province. She studied fine arts at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. Cussons moved to Israel but continued to write in Afrikaans. She published ten volumes of poetry, which earned her several awards, namely, the Hertzog prize once and the WA Hofmeyr prize twice, as well as the Ingrid Jonker, Eugene Marais and CNA prizes. She died in 2004.
