27 July 1971
South African Prime Minister, B.J. Vorster completed a tour of self governing territories in the Northern Transvaal during which he held talks with leaders of the North Sotho, Tsonga and Venda homelands. During the meetings the importance of working together was emphasized. The Homelands were at the centre of apartheid’s policy of separate development, aimed at transforming South Africa into a white republic in which Blacks did not have citizenship. This 'Bantustan' policy sought to assign every Black African to a 'homeland' according to their ethnic identity. The ten homelands created included Vendaland, Transkei, Kwa-Zulu, Bophuthatswana, Ciskei, Qwaqwa, KaNgwane, Kwandebele, Gazankulu and Lebowa.
