President F. W. de Klerk announced the opening of four hitherto Whites-only residential areas to mixed settlement

This Day in History: 24 November 1989
President F. W. de Klerk announced the opening of four hitherto Whites-only residential areas to mixed settlement. They included two districts in Johannesburg, one in Durban, and Cape Town's District Six, which had been a mixed-race area until it was cleared for White settlement in 1966. The reform was described by Conservative Party (CP) spokesman Clive Derby-Lewis as quite disgraceful.
