Othello is staged for the first time in SA with a Black actor, John Kani

A production of Shakespeare’s “Othello” in which the Moor is played by black Actor, John Kani, was staged at the Market Theatre on 16 September 1987. The play was produced by actress Janet Suzman. Suzman is also the co-founder of the Market Theatre.
