Nizaam Carr was born in Cape Town on 4 April 1991.[i] He is a professional South African rugby player, and usually is positioned as a flanker or number 8. He first attended Alexander Sinton High School, before being offered to play rugby for Bishop Diocesans.[ii] Nizaam played Craven Week in 2009, and was selected for the senior Western Province team in 2011. Nizaam formed part of the South African Under 20 team, which competed at the 2011 International Rugby Board Junior World Championships.[iii] He made his debut for the Stormers Super Rugby Team in the 2012 season.[iv] In 2013, he was voted Western Province Rugby’s Most Promising Senior Forward.[v] Nizaam made his first international Springbok test debut against Italy in Padova on 22 November 2014.[vi] Nizaam won the Players’ Player of the Year Award, as well as the Adidas Most Valuable Player Award at the annual Western Province Rugby Awards in 2014.[vii] Nizaam was nominated at the 2014 South African Rugby Awards in three categories namely, South African Rugby Union Player of the Year; ABSA Young Player of the Year; and ABSA Currie Cup Premier pision Player of the Year.[viii] Nizaam is the first Muslim rugby player to be selected for the Springboks, and also the first Muslim to have captained a Super Rugby team, when he led the Stormers in Round 18 of the 2015 Super Rugby season.[ix] Nizaam was selected to represent South Africa’s ‘A’ Squad during the England Saxons tour of South Africa in June 2016.[x] Nizaam initiated the Cape Sports Academy in Athlone, which is a youth sports academy motivating children through sport.[xi]
