A Nigerian Boeing 727 airliner carrying 143 people crashes some twenty-five miles from Lagos, killing all on board

This Day in History: 7 November 1996
On 7 November 1996, an ADC Airliner ADK 096 crashed near Ejirin, killing all 143 passengers (some reports state 142/141). The plane departed from Port Harcourt destined for Lagos airport when it conflicted with a Triax Flight TIX 185 that was heading for Enugu. It was reported that the air traffic controller delayed to clear the wrong plane to descend thus causing the crash. He then sounded off the traffic collision avoidance system. The pilot, in trying to avoid a collision rolled the plane too far and it overturned. He pilot lost control and the plane descended to the ground at such speed that it disintegrated on impact. A later investigation revealed the cause of the crash to be “ the untidy traffic separation by the radar controller”  and "the error in judgment by the pilot of ADK 096 continuing his turn heading to 330 M to avoid TIX 185”
