Natal Indian Congress is formed

22 August 1894
The Natal Indian Congress (NIC) is formed by Mahatma Gandhi in order to fight discrimination against Indian traders in Natal. The party became the first permanent political organisation to strive to maintain and protect the rights of Indians in South Africa. The NIC, Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) and the Cape Indian Congress later went on to form the South African Indian Congress (SAIC). Thereafter, many joint activities between the SAIC and African National Congress (ANC) were organised.
