Mthunzi Njakazi, ANC member, is killed in shooting after returning from exile

This Day in History: 28 January 1991

On this day, Mthunzi Velemseni Njakazi an African National Congress (ANC) member was shot in the legs and chest at Warwick Junction taxi rank near the Berea police station, Durban. This was allegedly done by askari (former ANC member who defected to the Bureau of State Security) members after his return from exile.

The Durban City police called for an ambulance but the Security police allegedly delayed the victim getting to the hospital and he subsequently died. Police claimed that they shot Njakazi because he was attempting to steal a white woman's bag.
