This Day in History: June 28, 1895
Louis Bosman Raymond was born in Pretoria on 1 January 1895.[i] Raymond won a gold medal in the men’s singles at the Olympic Games in 1920, hosted in Antwerp, Belgium.[ii] Raymond overpowered Japan’s Ichiya Kumagai in the men’s final[iii] despite not being the South African champion at the time.[iv] Raymond claimed the title after his Olympic victory by beating Brian Norton, and retained the title six times.[v] He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 1924, and quarterfinals of the French Open in 1927.[vi] Raymond played in ten ties for the South African Davis Cup team between 1919 and 1931.[vii] He also has a record 10 wins and 11 loses.[viii] Raymond passed away on 30 January 1962 in Johannesburg.[ix]
