Jan Christoffel Greyling Kemp, general during South African War, is born

On 10 June 1872 Jan Christoffel Greyling Kemp, general during the South African War (the Second Anglo-Boer War), Member of Parliament and SA minister of agriculture, was born in the district of Amersfoort, Eastern Transvaal. He was the second child of Jurie Johannes Kemp and Greyling Maria Aletha. Jan Christoffel Greyling Kemp together with General Koos de la Rey, Christiaan de Wet, Lt.-Col. Manie Maritz and Christiaan Beyers, the Commandant-General of the Union Defence Forces, were all opposed to the use of South African forces beyond the Union's borders. Subsequently, they chose to rebel and a revolution was planned to coincide with Beyers' resignation as Commandant General. In October 1914, Manie Maritz declared the Union an independent Republic; he then crossed into German South West (now known as Namibia) to ask for help against the government of Louis Botha.
