At an international summit in SA leaders pledge to push for a new global trade deal that will help poor countries

This Day in History: 12 February 2006
On 12 of February 2006, the Progressive Governance Network held a summit in Hammanskraal South Africa. The aim of this gathering was to strategize ways in which global trade could be made more equitable for poor countries. This association, which falls under the umbrella of the London  based think tank known as The Policy Network, is comprised of centre politicians, academics, and leaders. The two day meeting that commenced on 11 of February 2006 was the seventh meeting by the organization. Included in the delegates were South Africa President Thabo Mbeki, British PM Tony Blair, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Korean PM Lee Hae-Chan, Ethiopian PM Meles Zenawi, Swedish PM Goeran Persson and New Zealand PM Helen Clark. Among the goals of the Policy Network initiative is to promote a modern progressive agenda based on their collective experiences of societal development in order to bring about social renewal as well as explore issues surrounding Globalisation and society.
