Humphrey Khoza, former chief executive officer of Uthingo Management (Pty) Ltd and director of several other companies, is born in Germiston

Humphrey Mbuyiseni Khoza is the former CEO of Uthingo Management, the first company awarded the bid to operate the South African National Lottery. Born in Germiston, Gauteng, in 1947, Khoza attended St Augustine’s High School in Dundee, Kwazulu-Natal and later earned his BSc at the university of Zululand in 1969 and his PED IMD in Switzerland in 1995. Khoza professes that he inherited his entrepreneurial skills from his mother, who was the sole breadwinner in his family. He was determined to work & live outside of Germiston, seeking & obtaining working opportunities in Johannesburg, but was denied access by the Bantu Affairs minister owing to his status as a Germiston resident. While Germiston was only 15km away from Johannesburg, he was banned from working outside of his place of birth until South Africa became a democratic nation.  Among Khoza’s most notable achievements are his award of the Boss of the Year title in 2001, being the first black president of the South African Chamber of Business (and also the first president to serve two consecutive terms), and also winning the bid to host the World Lottery Association convenetion in Durban, 2004. Khoza also served as leader of a grassroots church and cited his religion as a powerful influence over his life. He died in a car accident in Alberton in 2006, aged 59.
