During the South African War (Anglo-Boer War 2), General Kemp attacked Brigadier-General Dixon at Vlakfontein and captured the field guns. Dixon launched a counterattack and Kemp withdrew. During the Republican withdrawal, an after-rider, Windvogel, acted heroically when he rushed to the aid of a burgher. Under a hail of bullets he helped him into the saddle and he covered his retreat, dismounting several times to shoot at pursuers.
