This Day in History: 25 May 1976
Rene de Villiers, member of parliament for Parktown, drew the attention of deputy minister of Bantu education, Dr Andries P. Treurnicht, to the fact that an explosive situation was developing in Soweto, caused by the introduction of Afrikaans as medium of instruction in certain secondary school subjects. The minister stated that to his knowledge, there was no cause for concern. The Department of Bantu Education was clearly not fully informed about the situation in the Black township as the events of 16 June 1976 bore testimony.
