The Democratic Alliance held a federal conference in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Mmusi Maimane, 34, was elected the New Black DA leader to succeed Ms Zille. 1,425 delegates from across the country voted by a secret ballot. DA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip was announced as the party's new federal chairman, with Alf Rees elected as federal chairman of finance, and Thomas Walters as deputy chair of federal council. Third deputy chair is Desiree van der Walt, second deputy chair is Refiloe Ntsekhe and the party's first federal deputy chairperson is Ivan Ivan Meyer.
