The Conservative Party decides on talks with National Party and expel a member

This Day in History: 27 April 1992
The Conservative Party (CP) caucus agreed to hold talks with the National Party (NP) on setting up a White state (volkstaat). The caucus expelled a Member of Parliament, Koos van der Merwe, because he did not adhere to party discipline. Van der Merwe advocated immediate participation in the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA), and was not an advocate of the volkstaat idea but rather of federalism within a unitary state. The party disapproved of his attack on its leader Dr Andries Treurnicht.
