British Kaffraria becomes a province with its own administration
The area that became known as British Kaffraria was overrun by violence between British colonisers and local Xhosa inhabitants from the early 1830s. Several frontier wars were fought over the territory, but in 1860 the area was declared a Crown Colony under administration of Lieutenant-Colonel John MacLean.
