Barry Micheal Hough was a literary critic and author of Afrikaans teenage fiction. He was born in Johannesburg in 1953. He obtained a BA Communications degree from the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) in 1970 and went on to obtain an MA in English. Hough held several positions in the writing industry, including teaching and writing for Newspapers.
Hough’s debut novel was published in 1986, titled My kat word herfs. The book was targeted at the teenage market and was a finalist in the Sanlam Youth Story competition. He went on to write several other books that would prove to be more successful than his debut novel. Hough was found dead in his flat in Melville, Johannesburg on 17 August 2004. His last novel, titled Breek, was published in 2001 and was co-written with Lizz Meiring.
