This Day in History: 12 June 1917
On 12 June 1917, Dr Ansuyah Ratipul Singh, medical doctor, novelist and community worker, was born in Durban. She moved to London where she completed her degree in Medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1944. In 1946, Dr Singh returned to South Africa and become involved in the Passive Resistance Movement in Durban. She published numerous professional articles.
Although Dr Singh was known for her medical work, she was also known as a novelist and the author of two-three act plays. Dr Singh also lectured widely to students on a range of topics ranging from health and family planning, to the arts and the role of women in the Indian community. She continued her medical work until her death in 1979.
