Louise (Lulu) Latsky, favourite author of Afrikaans books, mostly for children, was born in Carnarvon, in the Karoo region of South Africa. Latsky was known for her storybooks, which were handwritten on blocks of writing paper. From 1943 until 1950 or 1951, she acted as the children's science editor for the Nasionale Pers and collaborated in the publication of the Kennis vir Almal series, to which she contributed nine titles. She was the first woman to be awarded a Doctorate at the University of Stellenbosch and the first woman in South Africa to receive a Doctorate in Science.
