Summary

When Paul Simon embarked on a project to draw inspiration from South African musicians, he set out on a perilous obstacle course that would stir fevered controversy.

Simon entered into a political minefield: he transgressed the United Nations’ call to boycott South Africa’s apartheid regime, he angered the African National Congress and other liberation movements and he dared to question the thinking behind their political tactics.
