Relations between the people of Mozambique and South Africa reach far back to long ago, when permanent contact was established through social networks because of a
sense of affinity. Cordial relations were consistent from pre-colonial times and there were strong trade and social relations until colonial powers penetrated the region. The so-called ‘Mfecane’, marked this era and left an indelible and similar cultural mosaic throughout the region. In Mozambique, migration mainly from northern KwaZulu Natal gave birth to the state of Gaza, bordered by the Nkomati River to the south; the Zambezi River to the north; the Indian Ocean to the east and the Lebombo and Chimanimani mountain ranges to the west.
