Mayibuye, published for many years as a small, underground newsletter, was one of three African National Congress publications alongside Sechaba and Dawn (Umkhonto we Sizwe). Circulation was limited and hampered by conditions of illegality. Publication began in late in 1966 with the aim of stimulating political debate and discussion to promote the voice of the banned Congress to the masses. Legal publication began in 1990 after the unbanning of the African National Congress
No issues of Mayibuye were published from June 1969 to January 1975 (inclusive) and December 1975 to May 1978 (inclusive).
