This study will attempt to add to this debate with an examination of the 1949 Riots in Durban. The primary object will be to investigate the intergroup relations between the Africans and Indians within the community, and to trace these relations to the outbreak of violence. In so doing, it will be necessary to analyse the growth of urbanization and the frustrations therein together with the ideological developments taking place. Such an examination will also involve an investigation of the white group within the community and its role in relation to the other groups.
