PRESS RELEASE

2016 Inkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Programme celebrates heroes and heroine of the liberation struggle

The 2016 edition of the iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History programme is on and this year will see the learners rub shoulders with the South African liberation stalwarts such as Sophie de Bryn and Dan Sechaba Montsitsi. The theme for 2016 is aligned to the "Honouring our Heroes and heroines programme" of Freedom Park.

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History is a culmination of an enormous collective effort of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and South African History Online (SAHO) which began in 2005. The learners, educators, district and provincial coordinators and adjudicators contributed tremendously in making the iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History competition a great success over the years.

The aim of the programme to educate the youth about the injustices of the past and the valuable lessons that can be drawn from it. This programme also empowers learners in conducting oral history research, with an array of skills developed in the process which includes data collection, organisation of data, data analysis as well as report writing which prove valuable beyond your school years

The programme creates an opportunity for learners not only to gain knowledge on the values shared within your community but also to afford them the opportunity to become catalysts of change within their communities. It also seeks not only to honour the liberation struggle heroes and heroines but also seeks to raise awareness and conscientise the nation about the country's past and continue to build a united and non-racial society.

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Programme is scheduled to take place from 4 to 7 October 2016 with learners and educators presenting their projects in parallel sessions on the 5 October 2016 to 6 October 2016 at Freedom Park. Winners will be announced at an award winning and gala dinner ceremony on the evening of Thursday, 6 October 2016 at Freedom Park.
