The William Fehr Collection had been on exhibition at the Castle – more or less unchanged – from the 1950s. The core of the collection comprises historical artworks dating from South Africa’s colonial past.
How can we today view a collection that offers glimpses of our past through a colonial lens? Can they help us not only to understand our colonial past, but encourage dialogue around how we see this past today, and what it means now? The current display represents the beginning of a process to reinterpret this important historical archive for diverse contemporary viewers.
