John J Skomolo was an Anglican clergyman prominent in the Cape African National Congress (ANC) in the 1940s and 1950s, Skomolo was also a member of the ANC national executive committee from 1949 to 1955 and acted as ANC chaplain at numerous conferences. While he shared the cautious views of many older ANC leaders as Africans entered the militant decade of the 1950s, he lent his support to the Defiance Campaign of 1952, and helped to organise volunteers in his hometown of Aliwal North. He later became inactive in the Congress movement and joined the Liberal Party.
