Namibian John Pandeni was one of hundreds of People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan) SWAPO fighters who were captured and imprisoned on Robben Island. After his release in 1985, he became the founding General Secretary of the Namibia Food and Allied Workers Union. His union career was followed by an even more illustrious career in politics that culminated in his appointment as Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rehabilitation in March 2005. Pandeni died suddenly on 14 March 2008.
