Fanio (also documented as Fanozi and called Chicken Man) Mkize was born in 1950. When Mkize was retrenched from Clover Dairies he earned a living dealing in live chickens.
He now supports his family by creating wheeled, fur covered wooden animals. Mkize sells his work outside the Old Supreme Court, Pietermaritzburg and at flea markets in Pietermaritzburg and Durban, often dressed in a chicken outfit. He also sells through the Helen de Leeuw and Goodman Galleries in Sandton and Lizard in Cape Town.
