Ntshangase was born at Nongoma, Zululand. He attended art classes at KwaBazini CP School; he did his secondary schooling at KwaZide High School; he had to leave school in Standard 9 due to lack of finances. He is largely self-taught as an artist.

He worked for a construction company in Empangeni building houses. He moved to Durban in 1982 where he met a number of Durban artists. 

In 1993/4 he attended a printmaking workshop at the NSA Gallery. He has exhibited on a number of group exhibtions between 1984 and 1992, including the African Arts Festivals organised by the University of Zululand. He won silver medals on the 1992 and 1993 NSA members exhibitions. He has undertaken one commission and is represented in public and private collections in SA.
