Alan Arnold Aderem was restricted to his Cape Town, Western Province (now Western Cape) home. His house arrrest restricted him to his home between the hours of 7pm to 6 am. The only visitors  he was permitted were his  mother and medical practitioner.

Aderem was a postgraduate chemistry student at the University of Cape Town. He was a voluntary social worker in teh informal settlements in Cape Town. His banning order specifically prohibited him from entering any educational institution, any harbour or any black township.
