On 24 August 2012, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) issued a statement expressing its shock and sharing its concern for the lives taken in the Marikana Massacre. They joined all South Africans who lost their loved ones in their grief and the country that was in a state of shock over this tragic event. It was and is the single largest case of police brutality since the advent of democracy. The statement was issued few days after the massacre.
