The Appeal Court in Bloemfontein set aside Winnie Madikizela Mandela's sentence of five years' imprisonment for kidnapping four youths and a one year sentence related to a charge of being an accessory to assault. This was imposed by the lower court judge in favour of a fine that was a payment of the victims’ and a suspended sentence. The judges who sets aside Madikizela Mandela's jail sentence did not explain their reasons for their judgement.
