Gerard Moerdyk designed the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, some churches and public buildings. On churches he replaced the traditional crucifix with an octagonal formation, incorporated domes, crescent-shaped windows and Cape Dutch gables. 

He is well known for his work on the Bloemfontein Reserve Bank Buildings and the University of Pretoria's library.
