Victor V. T. Mbobo was born in the Cape, he graduated from Fort Hare in 1935. While teaching at a Pretoria high school, he participated in the founding of the Youth League and in 1947 was chosen as the league's delegate to a conference of the World Federation of Democratic Youth in Prague. He spent four months touring Eastern Europe, and in 1949 the Communist paper Inkululeko mentioned him as a possible candidate for the African National Congress (ANC) presidency. He was elected to the ANC national executive committee in December 1949, but he cut short his political career a year later when he moved to Umtata to begin a law practice.
