Franklin Kaye Kendall

Kendall was an architect whose interests led him to join SASA as both artist and administrator. Born in Melbourne, Australia, 1870. He was educated at King\'s College in London. Articled to an architectural firm for five years, he qualified as an ARIBA in 1894 and an FRIBA in 1912. He came to Cape Town in 1896, soon after joining Sir Herbert Baker in a partnership. Here he allied himself with local cultural groups, joining the Owl Club and the SADC. In 1902 he joined the reconstituted SASA, and was later its President from 1917 to 1918. A dynamic personality, he was also a founder of the CPIA and served as its President from 1913 to 1915. For some years he was also a President of the SAFAA and a Trustee of the SANG. He was Vice-President of the National Society from 1928 to 1929. As a Trustee of the SANG he advised on its new building, which opened in 1930. Kendall is now forgotten as an artist, but chiefly remembered for his restoration of the Groot Constantia Manor House after the disastrous fire of 1925. He later wrote a book in which he analysed the discoveries made during the process of reconstructing it.
