Baron Joachim Ammena van Plettenberg was born on 8 March 1739 in Leeuwarden, Friesland in the Netherlands. He came to the Cape as an employee of the Dutch East India Company (DEIC). In 1767 he became “Independent-Fiscal”, the highest official of justice at the Cape. He became governor of the Cape after the death of Governor Ryk Tulbagh in 1771.
