Ciskei becomes the fourth Black homeland to be granted independence. The National Assembly, consisting of both elected members and thirty-seven hereditary chiefs, elects Chief Sebe as president the following day. The date of Sebe's election as president seems to be 5 December, though some sources give it as 4 December. The source South African Institute of Race Relations. (1982).
