Born in Cape Town, Steven Gray is one of South Africa’s most prolific writers. He received an M.A. in English from Cambridge University, a M. Fine Arts from the University of Iowa and from Rand Afrikaans University he received a D.Litt and D.Phil in 1978.
Gray’s literature falls into a range of genres, including poetry, novels, biographies and plays. An excellent editor, he was one of the editors of the fourteen-volume anniversary edition of the works of Herman Charles Bosman from 1997 to 2006
Internationally, Gray has held fellowships in Italy and America, and was writer-in- residence at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2007 the Department of Arts and Culture honoured Gray with a South African Literary Award for Life Time Achievement.
