The Queens Fort Museum fort erected in 1848, originally housed the Artillery Unit of the Free State, and depicts all major military conflicts from 1820, including the apartheid struggle.
The Queen’s Fort Military Museum, in Church Street, depicts all the Military Conflicts that raged in the Free State and features exhibits dating from 1820 to the present. The Fort was originally erected in 1848 by Boer forces to help withstand attacks by local Basotho tribes. This Museum overlooks the City and is known to have been used as a Military Hospital, Military Headquarters and a Jail.
The Military Museum has many interesting exhibits from the Anglo Boer War, World War I, World War II and the struggle against Apartheid. These displays are very interesting and you will enjoy taking your time in the Museum, taking in this History and learning about the City.
On the outside of the museum are the very exciting displays, Armoured Vehicles, Cannons and an Impala Fighter Jet, (see picture).
