The Special Shilling. After 1900 Durban saw a dramatic influx of “continental“ women and their pimps, and by 1904 some 370 prostitutes were plying their trade. Brothels were largely located in the Grey, Victoria, Beatrice, Carlisle, Albert and Prince Edward Street areas. Riding through the streets in rickshas was one way of advertising one’ s wares. Ricksha pullers also acted as pimps, and were often rewarded with what was commonly referred to as the “special shilling”.
