Ricksha owners. The return on the casual rental of vehicles to ricksha pullers was reported to give a full return on the capital outlay. This was not a bad return for those days and may have been better where owners also provided overnight facilities to their staff. Other in-house perks may have pushed profits even higher. DROA was the Durban Ricksha Owner’ s Association, and every owner affiliated to it displayed a brass plaque on the side of their vehicles. Pullers were licensed individually, and had their license plates placed permanently about their wrists, something that the Colonial Office found quite distasteful.
