Pinelands is just 10 km from the city centre. It originally was an unsuccessful, attempt at a pine tree plantation called: 'Uitvlugt'. Rows of pine trees were planted on what was then the desolate Cape Flats.
Located on the site of South Africa's first windmill, you'll find one of Cape Town's best kept secrets hidden away beside the Black River in a corner of the Oude Molen Eco-village, opposite Pinelands railway station, an historical area that once played host to Zulu King Cetswayo, who was kept here as "state guest " while awaiting transfer to England.
'Millstone' is an eco-friendly farm stall and café, a rare slice of the old rustic Cape Town, situated alongside a riding school in the shadow of an old farmhouse. Made for lazy breakfasts and lunchtimes, with great coffee, freshly squeezed juices, wholesome snacks and meals, the delicious smell of freshly baked bread coming from wood fired ovens, its relaxed natural setting cannot fail to put the breaks on a hectic schedule of non-stop site-seeing.
The suburb is post-war, hence the English influence, and local businessmen designed carefully and with some imagination - "Pinelands doesn't suffer from the usual box-grid-style streets but benefits from circular drives and roads that go off at tangents, making it a particularly welcome suburb in which to live!"
A number of the bigger employers in Cape Town are based in Pinelands as are both Vincent Pallotti Hospital and the Red Cross Children's Hospital. Mowbray and Rondebosch are adjacent suburbs, and access to the city centre and the beaches of False Bay is easy.
Mowbray Golf Course, just around the corner, is set at the foot of Table Mountain and renowned for its views, bird life and the fact that it has hosted the SA Open seven times.- Through the years, Mowbray has hosted the South African Open seven times, the Bell's Cup on three occasions and all major amateur championships. Many of the world's biggest names in golf have played Mowbray, including Bobby Locke, Norman von Nida, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Vijay Singh (a winner of the Bell's Cup) Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino and Ernie Els.
