On 16 February 2019, Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his first State of the Nation Address at the parliament as the newly elected president of South Africa. This followed his swearing in by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng after the resignation of Jacob Zuma  on 15 February 2018. In his speech, President Ramaphosa thanked Zuma for his service to the nation as the former President of the Republic. He added that he appreciated the way Zuma handled the difficult and sensitive transition process and was looking forward to seeing the nation united in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela.
