KwaNdebele

KwaNdebele (or place of the Ndebele) was granted self-government in 1984 and was intended to be the new home for the TransvaalNdebele people. It was established in 1979 when many Ndebele people were evicted from Bophuthatswana .

The homeland had about 300 000 residents, but most of them had to migrate for employment to urban centres like Johannesburg.

Its capital was Siyabuswa and it became part of South Africa in 1994. It now forms part of the Northern Province.

For a specific example of an Ndebele village, go to our project on Kwamsiza, which has a section covering the Ndebele and the Apartheid state .
