Parow

Parow was a Residential Suburb of Cape Town located some 16km from the City Centre. It was established by: 'Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Parow'. Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Parow was born on 1 March 1833 in a Province of Deutschland.

During a great storm in Table Bay in 1865, 19 ships were stranded. Amongst the many schooners was the; 'Kehrwieder', the ship of Captain Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Parow. After being stranded, Captain Parow settled down in; the Cape of Good Hope and married: 'Johanna Wilhelmina Timmerman'. (She was the daughter of the family that helped Captain Parow after being stranded on the Cape Coast.) Parow quickly realised the potential value of the Tyger Valley Area North of Cape Town and that the area held great opportunities for cattle trade. Captain Parow soon moved inland to this area and started selling ground in the area which is today known as Parow, which built up a great deal of wealth for the Captain. Parow died on 4 December 1910, in his house in Cassibelle, Maitland. His wife, JW Timmerman, died ten years prior. They did not have any children. Captain Parow's telescope is in the Town Hall of Parow.

a Prussian ship's captain who was shipwrecked at the Cape in 1865. He purchased the land in 1886, and the village was proclaimed in 1901.

Lying in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, Parow is just East of Goodwood and Southwest of Bellville, with easy access to some of the mother city’s major tributaries - the N7 and N1 - placing the Suburb in an effortlessly reachable position for those needing to get to the City Centre fast, or the outer reaches of the city via Paarl. Those living in Parow barely regard themselves as residents of the Northern Suburbs, because of the Suburb’s proximity to the City Bowl.
The Tygerberg Nature Reserve is a 278 hectare Reserve placed close to Parow, provides not only a variety of hiking trails but superlative views over the Cape Peninsula. And the Durbanville Golf Club, "Aside from providing a good round of golf, one has one of the prettiest settings of courses in the City!@"
