General Bantu Holomisa announced that he was abandoning a Supreme Court action aimed at forcing the African National Congress (ANC) to reinstate him as a member. He aimed instead to organise a national conference to consider the formation of a new party, which he ultimately did together with Roelof Meyer, called the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
