On the day the National Party (NP) launched a 'core values' document in Pretoria, aimed at taking the party forward, it was also reported that the Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development Minister Roelf Meyer would resign his Cabinet post on 1 March 1996 to become Secretary-General of the 'revamped' National Party. Its leader President F.W. de Klerk confirmed that while it was not seeking formal alliances, it has held discussions with various parties opposed to the African National Congress (ANC).
